uni Cafe and the people who dine here are full of light and energy. When you enter, you stand in the vortex of a triangular, two-story building, greeted by a large vase of freshly cut flowers. Floor to ceiling windows fill the restaurant and fun bar with natural light. This warm ambiance makes up for the coldness and stiffness you sometimes encounter with the hosts. An interesting display of local art intertwined with multicolored indian blankets along the white adobe walls gives an American Southwestern feeling to zuni which is inspired by Northern Italian cuisine mostly. Up front is a great bar. Their best dish is a superbly roasted chicken (for two) with sage bread dressing, pine nuts, and currants (see USRG recipe courtesy Judy Rodgers, chef and co-owner). Menu choices are limited, but the run of oysters is long, and the seafood spectacular. When they have it the grilled tuna tastes like it was caught moments before, and is as juicy as a tender t-bone steak. Be sure to order the specialty chilled jalapeno vodka drink from the full bar, if you want to experience a delicious and contradictory sensation of cold fire. Currently on the menu is fine salt-roasted shrimp with corn and purple sage that can be preceded nicely with the risotto cakes with squash blossoms, pine nuts and parmesan cheese. Great hamburger served on focaccia. Outdoor dining is possible, and won't take away from the energy and warmth that fills the inside dining area. Great place for people-gazing and life studies. Two of the best spots here for this are just above the bar or in the brick oven room. Piano music Friday and Saturday 8pm-11pm. Light breakfasts are also good here - scones, fruit, buckwheat waffles, eggs. Espresso granita.reviewer:Mark Beaulieu 2/7/2003 8:51:00 AM Specialties: Roast Chicken with Sage Bread Salad, Oysters, House-cured Anchovies. |
