New Orleans
ew Orleans has 1169 restaurants, many very old Cajun, French and Southern style. The city is very slowly rebuilding after Katrina.
Recipes
Some restaurants are sharing their recipes so you can cook at home. To qualify as a
regional cooking guide, the USRG presents some typical regional dishes, offered by the
kitchens of diners of the area. Some restaurants also offer their dining and takeout menus
which we note. Any restaurant with recipes and menus has a special mention on their own
restaurant page.
Hotels
There are many grand and small hotels. Like the Clairborne Mansion.
A good listing is at New Orleans Hotel Service - a directory of most of the hotels in New Orleans French quarter area.
Mark's French Quarter Notes
Stops,
Central Grocery for a Muffaletta sandwich
Cafe Du Monde on Decatur Beignets at - wee hours or midday.
Cafe Sbisa Good local menu - Shrimp Remalarde tops
Praline Connection Great black Cajun food
Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro. Great small jazz club, strong on talent
Make sure you go to Preservation Hall – a run down nothing of hole in the wall where black musicians just play – as I recall near Pat O'Briens where you should have a Hurricane in the gaslit patio. And the Dungeon - a slit in the wall only open around midnight at T&B.
Word of caution about nights in the French Quarter. Stay with friends at night. Do not go north of Bourbon Street. Decatur, nearest the water, is the safest cross-transit street. At day, take the Tram if you need to transit to the convention center and have interests on the East side.
