resh organic ingredients are the clear notes used in painting meals at this famous, little house restaurant with natural wood, copper fixtures and low lighting.
Alice Waters, who coined "California Cuisine" is the chef/proprietor, and is well-known around the world for introducing the freshest possible approach of cooking to be used in her restaurant. Grand floral arrangements at the entrance and upstairs. Presentation and style of food is simple, and the dishes have subtle and complex flavors, and are made with perfection. Simplicity and directness are the mark of the service as well. Chez Panisse has four nightly seatings, and serves only fixed course meals (very pricey). Monday has a 3-course meal for $45. Tuesday through Thursday is a 4-course meal for $65. Friday and Saturday are 5-course meals for $75. Duck is one of their best items. The desserts should be made with the perfection of the other courses. The furnishings are simple again, with lots of nice wood paneling. No flowers or candles on the tables, but it doesn't matter because the entry flower arrangement is such a show stopper. The restaurant, located downstairs, is open for dinner, fixed price only Monday through Saturday with two seatings from 6 to 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 to 9:30 p.m and requires advanced reservations, unless you're the President (Bill Clinton dined there, and had a personalized dinner created for him by Alice Waters). Bouillabaisse Cooked in the Fireplace is a treat.reviewer:Mark Beaulieu 8/18/1999 4:04:00 PM Specialties: Bouillabaisse |
